Charitable Giving through the “I Do” Foundation

Since I don’t feel creative enough at the moment to write a detailed and perhaps slightly nagging blog post about charitable giving, I’m going to copy + paste the form letter that the I Do Foundation created for me (below).

Dear Friends and Family,

This is another tactic in our battle of wedding carbon-footprint conciousness! Aaron and I decided we already have a lot of what we need. In lieu of a tranditional gift please consider making a donation instead to one of the following foundations:

Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, Union of Concerned Scientists. The Earth rocks and you know it! Let’s help keep it that way.
Richmond SPCA – Support a local charity in their mission to help Central Virginia’s homeless cats, dogs, and other pets. This one is pretty close to our heart as both of our cats came from no-kill shelters.
Green Restaurant Association – Eating out doesn’t have to mean you can’t eat sustainably. The GRA is a national non-profit organization that provides a convenient and cost-effective way for restaurants, manufacturers, distributors, and consumers to become more environmentally responsible.

Carbon Neutral is Apparently Hilarious To Some

I got a lot of laughs today at work when I mentioned that one of my top goals for my wedding was to have a “carbon neutral or even a carbon negative footprint.” This came after some discussion in which some co-workers of mine were teasing me about spending too much money. Although I think I am still on my budget, I do think it’s important to keep the planet in mind when hosting a big party like a wedding.

Cynical types would argue that to be the most environmentally friendly I should just elope and spare everyone the pain and inconvenience of travel. In reality, weddings are just too much of a part of the culture to dismiss altogether. Plus, I like the idea of hosting one big cool party for my family and friends.

Anyway, I am determined to keep the environment in mind at every turn! No matter how much Sherry makes fun of me for it… :)

3/14/2010: Updated the color scheme a bit to give more prominence to the orange/gold color alongside the gray. Bright red/orange and blue kept for possible accent colors.

Now that I’m done with the MS. MIT program, I have some “free time” that I can use to plan my wedding! I am not looking to have a very big fancy affair; I am mainly looking to have some fun and eat some cake. If those are your expectations as well, I am sure you will have a blast.
